Cesar Chavez — the late labor chief and civil rights icon who cofounded the United Farm Staff — is beneath hearth after accusations surfaced he abused younger ladies and minors … with celebrations honoring him now being canceled.
The UFW launched an announcement Tuesday saying it discovered of “deeply troubling allegations” that Chavez “behaved in methods which can be incompatible with our group’s values.”
Whereas a few of the experiences contain household points … the org says the “way more troubling” allegations contain abuse of younger ladies and minors. Although UFW says it would not have firsthand information of the allegations, it says they’re critical sufficient that the org is taking “pressing steps” to be taught extra and assist potential victims.
The surprising information comes only some weeks earlier than Cesar Chavez Day on March thirty first. UFW says it’s sitting out all Cesar Chavez Day celebrations this 12 months … and a few cities — together with San Antonio — have already referred to as off occasions honoring Chavez.
The Cesar Chavez Basis says it is also “deeply shocked and saddened” by the disturbing allegations … which it says contain claims of inappropriate sexual habits with ladies and minors whereas he was president of UFW.
Chavez died in 1993 at 66 … and in 2014, President Barack Obama established Cesar Chavez Day as a federal vacation honoring the labor chief.
