LOS ANGELES — Bob Weir, guitarist, singer and founding member of the Grateful Lifeless, has died at age 78.
Weir’s loss of life was introduced Saturday in an announcement on his Instagram web page.
“It’s with profound unhappiness that we share the passing of Bobby Weir,” the assertion mentioned. “He transitioned peacefully, surrounded by family members, after courageously beating most cancers as solely Bobby may. Sadly, he succumbed to underlying lung points.”
Weir joined the Grateful Lifeless – initially the Warlocks – in 1965 in San Francisco at simply 17 years previous. He’d spend the subsequent 30 years enjoying on limitless excursions with the Grateful Lifeless alongside fellow singer and guitarist Jerry Garcia, who died in 1995.
Weir wrote or co-wrote and sang lead vocals on Lifeless classics together with “Sugar Magnolia,” “One Extra Saturday Night time” and “Mexicali Blues.”
Within the many years since he saved enjoying with different tasks together with Lifeless and Firm.
“For over sixty years, Bobby took to the highway,” the Instagram assertion mentioned. A guitarist, vocalist, storyteller, and founding member of the Grateful Lifeless. Bobby will perpetually be a guiding drive whose distinctive artistry reshaped American music.”
Weir’s loss of life leaves drummer Invoice Kreutzmann as the one surviving unique member. Founding bassist Phil Lesh died in 2024.
Lifeless and Firm performed a collection of live performance’s for the Grateful Lifeless’s sixtieth anniversary in July at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
